The short version
THAT History Quiz is operated by Loud Interactive, LLC, an Illinois limited liability company. We collect what we need to sign you in, track your rating, and keep the quiz working. We don’t sell your data. We don’t run third-party ad tracking. You can ask us to delete your account at any time and we will.
What we collect
- Account info from Google. When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture URL.
- Profile info you provide.Display name, optional avatar upload, bio, and your “30 minutes with anyone in history” answer if you choose to fill it in.
- Quiz play data. Every answer you submit, the clue you buzzed at, whether the grader judged it correct, your Glicko rating over time, sessions, and feedback or Challenge submissions you send.
- Technical logs. IP address, user agent, timestamps, and error logs kept by our hosting provider (Vercel) for security and debugging. These rotate on a short retention window.
- Cookies. One session cookie set by our authentication system to keep you signed in. No advertising cookies, no third-party analytics cookies.
How we use it
- Sign you in and keep you signed in.
- Show your rating, history, and profile to you and on the public leaderboard.
- Calibrate questions, fix bugs, and decide what to build next.
- Send the operator (brent@loud.us) an email when you submit a Challenge or feedback, so we can act on it.
- Defend against abuse — bots, scraping, spam.
We do not use your data to target advertising or sell it to anyone.
Who sees what
Public on the site:
- Your display name, avatar, and rating on the leaderboard.
- Your public profile page, if you have one.
Private to the operator:
- Your email address.
- Your per-question answer history (correct and incorrect).
- The content of any Challenge or feedback you submit.
Service providers
We use a small number of third-party services to run the quiz. They each process limited data on our behalf:
- Google — sign-in and account identity.
- Supabase — database, authentication tokens, and avatar file storage.
- Vercel — application hosting and edge delivery.
- Anthropic — large-language-model grading of free-text answers (your answer text and the canonical answer are sent, your account identity is not).
- SendGrid — transactional email for Challenges and feedback.
- Cloudflare — DNS for thathistoryquiz.com (which redirects here).
Children
THAT History Quiz is open to history students of all ages. If you are under 13, you must have a parent or guardian’s permission to sign in with their Google account. We do not knowingly create accounts for children under 13 without parental involvement, and we will delete any such account on request from a parent or guardian. Contact brent@loud.us.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Export everything we have on you.
- Correct anything that’s wrong.
- Delete your account and the data attached to it.
Email brent@loud.us. We respond personally — usually within a few days.
Changes
We update this page when we change something material. The “last updated” date at the top will reflect the most recent change.
