Who you’re dealing with

THAT History Quiz (the “Service”) is operated by Loud Interactive, LLC, an Illinois limited liability company taxed as an S-Corporation. By using the Service you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.

Your account

You sign in with a Google account. You’re responsible for what happens through your account. Don’t share credentials, don’t impersonate anyone, and tell us at brent@loud.us if you think your account is being used without your permission.

We can suspend or delete an account that’s being used to abuse the service, harass other players, scrape the question bank, or game ratings. We’ll usually try to talk to you first.

Acceptable use

When you’re using the Service, you agree not to:

  • Try to extract the question bank, the answer canonicalization, or our rating internals at scale.
  • Use bots, scripts, or automation to play the quiz on your behalf or inflate ratings.
  • Submit Challenges or feedback that are abusive, defamatory, or designed to harass.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive source code beyond the bounds of normal browser inspection.
  • Use the Service to violate any law or anyone else’s rights.

What you submit

You keep the rights to the bio text, “30 minutes with anyone in history” answer, avatar, Challenges, and feedback you submit. By submitting them, you give us permission to display them on your profile (where applicable), use them to operate the Service, and reference anonymized excerpts when describing how the Service works.

Don’t upload anything you don’t have the right to share — copyrighted avatars, photos of people who didn’t agree to be uploaded, etc.

Ratings and competition

Ratings are computed using a Glicko-2 implementation with a small set of modifications described on the site (rating cap per attempt, clue-position multipliers). The rating you see at any given moment is our best calculation, not a guarantee of skill or ranking accuracy. We reserve the right to recalibrate questions, reset bands of ratings, or correct errors when we discover them.

The Service is independent of and not affiliated with The Great History Challenge or any school history program. Playing here does not influence your standing in any external competition.

Free service, no guarantee

The Service is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available.” We don’t guarantee that questions will be perfectly accurate, that the grading will catch every valid synonym, that ratings will be stable, or that the site will be available without interruption. We’ll try, but we don’t promise.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Loud Interactive, LLC and its principals, employees, and contractors disclaim all warranties — express, implied, or statutory — including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Limit of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim arising out of or related to the Service is limited to one hundred US dollars (USD $100). We are not liable for indirect, consequential, incidental, special, or punitive damages, including lost data, lost ratings, or lost competitive standing.

Trademarks

“THAT History Quiz,” “THAT Ladder,” “Think Hard About This,” and the THAT wordmark are trademarks of Loud Interactive, LLC. The Loud Interactive name and logomark are also trademarks of Loud Interactive, LLC. Other names mentioned on the site — Great History Challenge, Glicko, Chess.com, etc. — belong to their respective owners.

Changes to the Service

The Service is under active development. Features may change, get added, or get removed without notice. Question difficulty calibration runs continuously. Ratings may shift as the calibration improves.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When we do, the “last updated” date at the top will change. Material changes will be noted in a banner on the site for a reasonable window. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Cook County, Illinois.
